DALE GLANCED FROM HIS grandson to Rita’s niece and tamped down a need to laugh. Though, Cody’s interest was more open than that girl’s, she talked to him well-enough, if guarded. What caused that, he suspected, had to do with why she was here and wasn’t his business to figure out.

“So, you’re takin’ some time off?” he asked, looking at Rita again.

She nodded and fiddled with her drinking glass, the moisture pearled on the surface gathering around her fingertips. “I’ve decided this is the best time for it. I can spend time with Amy and do a few things I’ve neglected. For instance, I’d like to do something with my investments. You’re working on the McCue house, of course, but there’s the other property. Plus, I have a lot of land that, the more I think on it, I ought to put cows there.”

“You want to go into cattle?”

“I’m not sure yet,” she replied. “But there’s fifty acres north of Cotton Road with good drainage and nice pond.”

“I’ve seen it,” he said. “If you’re serious, I bet Mr. Porter will sell you a few.”

Rita pulled in a nervous breath. “I wouldn’t know how to approach him. I’m just Rita at the Barn, after all.”

“You don’t give yourself enough credit for making smart choices.” Dale reached for his own glass and took a swig. “After hearing what all you’ve bought in the last five years, I’m more than a little impressed.”

“You sure that’s just my purchasing decisions shining so bright?” she asked.

His low-volume laughter drew her young niece’s gaze. She glanced from one to the other.

“Of course, I have to keep one finger at the Barn because of the Autumn Dance,” Rita added. This effectively deflected whatever her niece might have been going to say.

And drew his grandson’s gaze. “There’s a dance?”

Dale nodded. “For the local high school, but I imagine you can go if you want to make some friends. You’ll need a date ....”

Cody glanced back toward Amy. She squirmed in her seat, uncomfortably, and rose. “I’m going to the ladies’ room. I don’t feel right.”

In a breath, she’d vanished. Dale wrinkled his brow. Something definitely wasn’t right with the girl. It could be the age difference, though he didn’t think a year and two months so much. She’d seemed to talk to his grandson well enough.

“You know, I should go check on her,” Rita said, rising.

Dale nodded, and she turned and made her way across the diner. Once out of earshot, Cody spoke.

“She’s the prettiest girl I ever did see.”

Despite his worry over Amy, Dale couldn’t stop himself from smiling. “Spoken like a true Texan,” he said. He placed one hand on the boy’s head and ruffled his hair.

Cody shook himself free, his expression growing worrisome. “She probably thinks I’m just a kid. I mean, she’s polite, but ...” He sighed. “I am just a kid. I’m a thief.”

Surprised to hear him admit that, Dale didn’t comment.

Cody looked up. “I stole money from dad’s closet. He found part of it in my room and blew up, smashed my phone and tossed me outside, told me to go support myself.
